Kristin Mallison and the art of upholstery

During the day she works in a company that produces custom-made curtains but in her free time she uses fabrics to give vent to his creativity.

Kristin Mallison is a young Brooklyn interior designer who found inspiration in the tapestries and upholsteries that surrounded her. Unlike most of the clothes used in the fashion world today, the materials applied to the furnishings are conceived to last more than 30 years.

Mallison began her search for vintage fabrics in flea markets and online. It is rare to find enough material to create new products, so the designer combines tapestries and drapes to give life to really unique and original corsets and vintage skirts.

Her work is based on the rediscovery of objects from the past to which she gives a new life, reinterpreting the typical textures of the rococo furniture of the ‘700 and transforming them into contemporary clothing. Her creations do not differ too much from what we see nowadays on the catwalks. Just think of the iconic corset by Vivienne Westwood that has now become a piece of the archive.

The imaginary of the 17th and 18th centuries reappearesn Mallison’s garments, not only in the shapes but also in the pictures represented on the fabrics. However, everything assumes a different interpretative key, her corsets are much more comfortable than those used in antiquity, they adapt to the body and not the other way around. “I don’t think there is anything more feminine than a corset or these historical silhouettes, and I want to interpret them in a modern, more playful way that is not at all constricting.” says the designer who, with her work, is giving back power and dignity to the female figure.
