We didn’t had to wait a lot for spring to come back. In Milan Flowers are blossoming, as there doing a lot of exhibitions and artistic ideas.
As the days become longer, walking around the center becomes a pleasant moment of relaxation after hours spent in the office and, for the most attentive observers, the center of Milan can turn into an open-air art galleryIn fact, starting from the last days of March, gigantic wooden nests appeared on the facades of some Milanese buildings that aroused the curiosity of many.
These installations, made in wood by the students of the Brera Academy, are the result of an idea by the Japanese artist Tadashi Kawamata, who created them as a preview for his exhibition “Nestswhich held from March 31st to July 23rd at the Building gallery.
The gallery, curated by Antonella Soldaini, is located in via Monte della Pietà, where the first giant nest appeared, followed by the grand hotel “et de Milan”, the Congress Center and Cariplo Foundation, and the courtyard of “le magnolie”.
Tadashi Kawamata, born in Hokkaido in 1953, is not new to this type of creation: the nests, in fact, have already conquered Paris, Florence, Naples, Lisbon, and in each city they have found a different terrain, different architectures to cling to, adapting to the city, becoming part of it without making any noise, as swallows have always done while life in the city flows at the usual rhythms.
When he arrived in Milan, Kawamata found a clean, tidy and rich city, made up of imposing palaces with an aristocratic soul, and he chose some of the most emblematic buildings to create his artwork.
The nest becomes a symbol; a symbol of home, of course, but also of fragility, instability, especially in a hostile environment like the city , but at the same time enhances the ability to adapt and the courage to start over.
Furthermore, the artist takes part in a perspective aimed at sustainability, of which he is almost a precursor: wood is one of the most sustainable materials being 100% natural. Its use, although it has decreased outside buildings, remains widely used in interior design, being for Kawamata an added value, a sort of link between the interior of the houses and its strong and fragile nests at the outside of them.
