The Vans brand, founded in 1966, became a landmark in footwear and its skateboarding sneakers are not only loved by skaters but almost by anyone, especially streetwear lovers.
The collaboration between MSCHF and Tyga, that will be released on 18 April, confirms this theory. Although there is no correlation with the Californian company, the “Wavy Baby” sneakers resulting from this union recall the iconic silhouette of the Old Skool. The upper part is made of canvas with suede inserts but what makes these sneakers distinctive is the distorted, wavy shape of the stitching, the lateral details and the midsole. These elements give to the shoe a never seen before aesthetic and a surreal optical effect, which is why everyone is currently talking about it, waiting for the official release.

This is not the first time, however, that a Vans silhouette inspires new successful designs.
There is the case of Revenge x Storm, which founded an empire on sneakers with the distinctive lateral lightning bolt. Apart from this detail, however, the lines of the shoes are very similar to the Old Skool by Vans. Although being reinterpreted in every way, with extravagant colorways, prints and materials always different, the element of inspiration remains unmistakable.

In 2019, instead, Maison Mihara Yasuhiro proposed a reinterpretation of more Vans’ iconic silhouettes: the checkered Slip-on, the Authentic, the Sk8-Hi and the Era. It added big laces to each of them and a large wavy midsole that gives the impression that the rubber is melting. On the tag of the Sk8-Hi proposed by the Japanese designer we can also read the words “Off the Mode”, a clear reference to the motto “Off the Wall” by Vans.

What about you? Which of these revisitations do you prefer?
